My pre-new year mood was ruined yesterday when I received word that a learned colleague I went to Law School with passed on yesterday. The story surrounding his mysterious death is heart-breaking; rumor has it that he had a misunderstanding with a co-worker who told him he wouldn't see 2013! Imagine that?!!
So it was a bit of a shock when he slumped about three days ago and finally surrendered to the cruel hands of the grim reaper yesterday. Makes you wonder about the kind of humans who live amongst us. While others where preparing good will messages to usher their friends and even enemies into 2013, someone was brazen enough to tell another pointedly, that he wouldn't make it into 2013 and unfortunately, the evil prediction came to pass!
My heart goes out to the family of the young man, especially his recently wedded wife who has sadly entered 2013 as a young widow; the most tragic of tragedies. My most fervent prayers are with you all. May God grant you all solace at this difficult time.
Mr. Ifeanyi Kalu Umeh, Esq was an epitome of gentility; a rare breed in the realm of men. One of those guys you are fortunate to meet in life who you believe deserve nothing but good because that's all they have been. Unfortunately, as Tupac Shakur once said, "the good die young." An unfortunate truth; an explanation for the unfavorable imbalance of good over evil in the world today. Rest in peace brother, for heaven can't help but accept your kind soul.
Away from melancholy! With the numerous stream of goodwill messages commemorating 2013, came a new onslaught to the written word. Just when you thought social media couldn't destroy English language any further, then came "HNY" accompanied with "IJN". C'mon guys! REALLY?!!! Show some respect for the name of Jesus by not abbreviating it. If you are guilty of this, yeah, I'm talking to you. Would you have me believe your thought process operates in abbreviations?
That aside, I wish you all a fantastic year in 2013. Just remember that the change in the number of the year doesn't make the positive change we want. It is the change that you make.

Malcolm my guy, I wish you a blissful 2013. Take heart for your guy, may his soul rest in peace. As for the abbrevations, all I can do is laugh beacuse am guilty of some abbrevations but I have never done tha IJN before sha.

It would be nice if you could publish the young man's info, as to his photograph, names, institutions attended and his call year, so that his aquaintance and others will be properly informed.
ReplyDeleteAs to the social media rubbishing our English language heritage, i share strong fears with you my brother. I've never been at ease with it's useage and development. Never. It kinda protrays a society that is degenerating in standards, values and morals. Imagine me sending a text message to my mother with the abbr. 'HBD', or to my pastor 'IJN' or 'HNM'. Honestly i'm afraid for where this is leading us to. May God help us.

DeleteAs regarding these abbreviations which seem to be catching on, I'm glad there are people who share my distaste for them as well. If the trend continues, English language as we know it may become extinct. Have a splendid year ahead!
